A Therianthrope is a member of the contemporary subculture of Therianthropy, which is based on a spiritual, psychological, and/or neurobiological identification as a non-human animal. Therianthropes understand that they have physical human bodies.
Therian is the short form of therianthrope. These are the current terms for a person who has a strong internal self-identification as a being of a non-human species. Around 2005, Therian became the commonly used short form of Therianthrope, replacing the old term Were. The term “therianthropy” was first mentioned in AHWW on December, 14, 1994.
There are many sub-types of therians that may or may not be mutually exclusive:
