A Therianthrope is a member of the contemporary subculture of Therianthropy, which is based on a spiritual, psychological, and/or neurobiological identification as a non-human animal. Therianthropes understand that they have physical human bodies.

Therian is the short form of therianthrope. These are the current terms for a person who has a strong internal self-identification as a being of a non-human species. Around 2005, Therian became the commonly used short form of Therianthrope, replacing the old term Were. The term “therianthropy” was first mentioned in AHWW on December, 14, 1994.[1]

There are many sub-types of therians that may or may not be mutually exclusive:
